Learn to Skate Hockey Skating Group Classes

The strongest hockey players start with the strongest skating.

Today’s game is faster, safer, and more skill-focused than ever. Skating has become the foundation that allows young players to accelerate, stop, turn, and move confidently in every hockey situation. A strong skating base makes the sport more fun, more successful, and more enjoyable for developing athletes.

Great hockey begins with great skating — and our pathway is built around that.

Hockey Skating 3–5 (Saturdays)

Next step after passing Basic 1 & 2 or Snowplow Sam 4

Hockey Skating 3–5 is our hockey-skating pathway. These classes build the skating strength, balance, and control young athletes need before adding sticks, pucks, or gameplay. Skills are taught without a stick so skaters can focus fully on skating technique.

Skaters work on:

  • Hockey stance and stride
  • Knee bend and power generation
  • Forward & backward edges
  • Quick starts and acceleration
  • C-cuts and crossovers
  • Glide turns & transitions
  • Controlled stopping
  • Speed, agility, and confidence

hese levels support readiness for Learn to Play and future club or travel hockey.

A note on scheduling:
Hockey Skating 3–5 is currently offered only on Saturdays, so many families continue in Basic 1–6 on other days when schedules require it. While Basic levels aren’t hockey-specific, the skating fundamentals developed there—edge control, balance, rhythm, and power—translate seamlessly when a player moves into Hockey 3–5 or Learn to Play. In today’s faster, more skill-driven game, the strongest players are consistently the strongest skaters. Every bit of skating instruction supports that goal.

Required Equipment:

  • Hockey skates
  • HECC-approved helmet

Youth Hockey Skills with Coach Bryan Reiss (Mondays)

A great option for new hockey players at any skating level

Coach Bryan’s program introduces skating with a hockey stick, focusing on balance, edges, turns, and quickness while holding the stick correctly. The curriculum is adjusted based on the skill level of the athletes in the class.

This program pairs perfectly with both LTS and Hockey 3–5 and supports early development in a welcoming environment.

Required Equipment:

  • Hockey skates
  • Helmet
  • Stick
  • Shin guards, hockey socks, and gloves recommended

Learn to Play (LTP)

For skaters who are comfortable skating independently

Once a child has the skating foundation, LTP introduces the hockey-specific skills:

  • Stick handling
  • Passing and shooting
  • On-ice awareness
  • Beginner positioning and team concepts
  • Confidence in full gear

LTP is where players begin playing hockey — after they have the skating strength that supports success.

Can my child take more than one program?

Yes — absolutely.

Many families combine:

  • Learn to Skate
  • Hockey 3–5
  • Coach Bryan’s Youth Hockey Skills
  • Learn to Play

These programs complement each other and give young athletes the strongest, most well-rounded start.
